Cecilia Hultman

"Cecilia Hultman has a singular eye and a singular sensibility for the poetry to be extracted from images of geological examinations, rocks, mountains, maps, satellite images, electro-microscope images – instrumental models of representation of micro- to macrocosm in, mostly, natural science. These are the absent-minded and at the same time precise worlds of images of measurability, survey, cross-section and analysis of detail – seemingly construed without any conscious aesthetical deliberation – that Cecilia Hultman give new context and charge with new content in her complex installations. (…) In her installations she experiments with positions of inspection and visual codes, text and sound are often included. Texts often carry a particular significance, like found or concrete poetry between the tangible and the imaginary, between terminology and invocation – or perhaps even – between science and art."

Magnus Bärtås, artist and professor at University College of Arts, Crafts and Design.

"To Cecilia Hultman, drawing is about understanding as well as consuming: she eats reality through the tip of her pencil, processes it with her metabolism and transforms it into independent works of art. For example, look at her methodical and minutely made drawings of satellite photos from the volcanic eruption of the Eviafjallajökull which stopped a large part of the air traffic in Europe in 2010. The process of drawing turned these scientific images personal. Hultman is performing a kind of organic alchemy".
